    Published: May 20, 2024 · Last update: Aug 20, 2024 · Pawel Bialecki

If you're a new iPhone user, you might need to turn off your device occasionally. Whether you're troubleshooting iOS or app issues, dealing with a battery behaving strangely, or simply wanting a break from constant notifications, knowing how to turn off your device correctly is essential. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you.

    1. Press and hold the power button (also known as the side button) on the right side of the iPhone and one of the volume buttons simultaneously on the left side of the phone.
    2. A shutdown slider will appear on the screen. Drag it to the right to turn off your iPhone. That's it!

This method works for most iPhone models, including 15, 14, 13, 12, and 11.

How to Hard Restart a Frozen iPhone

Is your iPhone frozen or acting sluggish? Force restarting your device can help resolve these issues. This method is effective for iPhone 11 and later models:

    1. Press and quickly release the volume up button.
    2. Press and quickly release the volume down button.
    3. Press and hold the side button (power button) until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

During this process, you might see the standard shutdown screen with a slider for normal shutdown. Ignore it and keep the side button pressed until your phone completes the hard reset and restarts.

Note: Force restarting is different from a normal restart. It temporarily disables and re-enables the device software, helping to troubleshoot issues caused by iOS glitches. This process won't erase your data or settings, but it's always a good idea to back up important data regularly.

    Troubleshooting Hard Restart Issues

If you're having trouble performing a force restart, try the following:

    • Ensure you're pressing the buttons in the correct order and quickly enough. The optimal speed is about half a second per button.
    • Press the buttons with sufficient force.
    • Check for visible damage on your iPhone, such as a cracked screen or water damage. If you find any, seek professional repair services.

    Additional Tips

Turning off your iPhone is different from putting it to sleep. When you put your device to sleep, it stops displaying the screen and enters a low-power state. To do this, press the power button once or let the screen go blank automatically after a set time.

If the power-off slider doesn't appear when you press and hold the power button, your device may have an issue. In this case, contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for assistance.

    Summary

Turning off your phone is a straightforward process: press and hold the power and volume buttons, then drag the shutdown slider to the right. If you encounter any issues, seek help from forums, social media groups, or Apple Support. This guide covers models like iPhone 15, 14, 12, and 11.
